Toowoomba public lecture examines safety of young drivers
The safety and survival of teenage drivers on Australian roads will be the focus of this month’s USQ Community Capacity Building Lecture.
Toowoomba residents are invited to attend the free event, held in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Toowoomba East and the Community and Environmental Services Section of the Toowoomba Regional Council, on Tuesday, November 9.
The lecture will be presented by RYDA Australia Limited Queensland State Manager, Michael Cullen, and Rotary RYDA Committee Chair, Phil Chapman, as well as Tony and Paul Kennedy from the Drive for Life Young Driver’s Program.
The RYDA program is a road safety education program aimed at reducing death and injury amongst young people, specifically targeting new drivers aged 16 and 17. As driver safety is very important, it’s very simple to get
car insurance for cheap for your teen.
Community Capacity Building Project Coordinator and USQ honorary Professor, Glen Postle, said RYDA focused on attitude and awareness with the aim of helping young adults become better people on the road.
‘Michael Cullen and Phil Chapman will discuss how the program highlights the privilege and responsibilities of owning and driving a motor vehicle and also illustrate their rights and responsibilities as passengers and pedestrians,’ Professor Postle said.
‘RYDA is a community-based initiative of Rotary Clubs, partnering those organisations in our community that have a responsibility for road safety for youth.
‘Parents and teachers are welcome to come along and hear why their years 11 and 12 students should participate in this award winning program.’
Tony and Paul Kennedy from the Drive for Life Young Driver’s Program will also talk about the benefits of their defensive driver training program in educating youth and keeping them alive on the roads.
The public lecture will be held at the QCWA Hall, 263 Margaret Street on Tuesday November 9 at 6.45pm (for 7pm start). Registrations for the free lecture are still being taken, with anyone interested in attending encouraged to contact Professor Postle on 0407 362 331 or Darryl Bates on 4688 6758 or email: darrylbates@toowoombaRC.qld.gov.au
