USC – University of the Sunshine Coast

University Graduation Ceremonies

For many university students, the graduation ceremony represents the pinnacle of their academic careers and the beginning of a new exciting chapter in their lives. Because participation in a university graduation ceremony can only occur after a student completes all academic courses required for commencement, the graduation ceremony is often the most anticipated event in a university student’s academic career.

After spending countless tuition dollars and hours studying for examinations, the graduation ceremony provides formal recognition to students who have invested so much in their educational careers. Typically scheduled once or twice each year, graduation ceremonies often take place on a weekend to allow family members and friends to join students’ celebration of the completion of their academic requirements.

Graduation ceremonies are often quite formal in nature, and many involve an inspirational graduation speech or commencement address. Depending upon the size of a graduating class, some ceremonies involve thousands of family members and friends who gather in a large assembly hall to watch students receive official recognition of degree completion by university officials. Along with this recognition is the presentation of a diploma or tangible certification that all degree requirements have been completed by the graduating student.

Upon completion of the formal recognition of each graduating student, many ceremonies close with a joyful reception during which graduates and family members can reunite and celebrate together. Light food and beverages are often served to graduates and their guests, and university officials mingle with graduates to congratulate them again on their accomplishments.
